Beginning to Respond

Choose a short passage from your novel that made an impact on you as you read it, that made you stop and think maybe even say "Oh wow" to yourself.  It may have made you stop and think because you made a personal connection. It may have made you wonder and ask a question. It may have made you react in some emotional way to the words on the paper.  In your response, quote the passage and list the page number that it can be found on.  Explain, in detail, why you chose this passage, what reason did you have that made you stop and think or had you reacting in some way. Include your feelings and emotions as well as state any connections you made (text to self, text to text, text to world). An example  from another novel of how to start is this:
"Big signs were posted at the pool saying"No Jews or Dogs Allowed". pg 14
As I read this passage I couldn't believe that this could happen. How could the Jewish even be compared to dogs?"

  1. Why does everyone think one girl (Shauzia) and her dog (Jasper) can steal everything, even though they are just looking, I'm not sure if this is accurate enough but I'm pretty sure the antique person or butcher thought they were stealing on page 55 or so.

    1. @Umadbro? What part are you talking about? Do you mean when they kicked her out of the grocery store?

  2. Through the time of Shauzia's adventures she has incountered many obstacles and diffuculties that she has had to go through with the dog she found (Jasper). She has had to find work and feed both hungry mouths. Finally when help comes she blows her one chance of living a normal life, and getting the money she needs to go to France. Yet it is a big dream for such a small person but her big heart and strong will, shall help her find her way. May not be soon but it will happen one day. I think that everybody has those big dreams or goals they wish to conquer and most of the time people dont try hard enough or just start to forget what they need in life and just focus on what they want. This is what I think is exactly the opposite of Shauzia, she has taken time and care to make sure she and many other people stay fed and safe. I believe that she has the most courage out of anyone of any book.

    1. Very insightful Herculea. It is hard for many adults to see the 'big' picture so it would be even that much more difficult for a younger person. The 'all about me' world is what we live in. We live in the here and now, which is important, but also thinking about our future and what it coould be is important too. How hard would we fight to take care of others before we chose to take care of ourselves?

  3. Herculea I thought your comment was deep thinking, even if her life wasn't much until she got that job she is in jail for fraud her life is tough and since i'm not done the book I have doubtful chances she will even make it to france

  5. Mud city: I didn't believe Shauzia was much of a Strong person, at the start of the book she stood up for what she believed in. I thought Mrs. Weera was just bringing her down at the time. Shauzia is a very strong women, even if someone says she wouldn't do something right, she would still know she did it right, because in a town like that there are Taliban everywhere and people who might murder you but she still lives as a child in that dastard area she calls home. She might not realize it yet but her heart and mind is deep and strong, and I hope she carries that all her way. And if she makes it to France she better Carry it on.

    1. @Umadbro? i think that, those are very good thoughts and that putting the taliban and Mrs. Weera into her troubles makes it a bit more of a story since it really wasnt her fault that many horrible things have happened to her, and that she is treated like a baby.

  6. I think that Shauzia though she didnt know it had the will power and a strong hard set mind that could help her get whatever and where ever she needed to be. She has had courageous adventures and she never gave up when obstacles came at her. I think that through out the book she became stronger when she realized that it was up to her to get a job and food for her and Jasper.
